Parenthood requires an absurd amount of decisions. If you’re bringing twins into the world, those decisions can become even more complicated. (Also, if you’re anything like me, you’re not exactly an expert at decision-making.)
Let’s talk about shopping for twin baby strollers, which can be totally baffling. You’ll probably find yourself asking a lot of questions, such as: How much should I budget for my stroller? What’s the best stroller: tandem or side-by-side? What about inline strollers? Do I need to take out a second mortgage on my house to afford this stroller for kids? With so many options out there, how can I be certain I’m picking the right stroller?
Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. We certainly know how intimidating the double stroller search can be. At Twiniversity, we’ve thoroughly studied these types of strollers for years! We are here to dish all the details on what to consider when buying the best stroller for kids.
Why Is It So Complicated to Find the Right Stroller for Kids?
The answer is simple: every family is different! Maybe you have older children. Perhaps you have twin toddlers and a singleton baby. Maybe you’re training to push your stroller in a half marathon (hey, more power to you!). What works for one family may not work for another. There are so many factors that go into stroller consideration. It matters where you live and what kind of terrain you’ll be on. Other important circumstances include your home situation, storage situation, and doorway or hallway width. It’s enough to drive twin parents crazy!
Where You Live Makes a Big Difference!
- If you live in a city, you are typically dealing with narrow sidewalks, apartment living (maybe even a walkup), navigating narrow hallways, and usually not having a lot of storage space. In this case, a narrow side-by-side or an inline stroller (which is much shorter in length than a tandem stroller) would probably be best for you.
- If you live in the suburbs, you probably have wider sidewalks, doorways, and aisles or hallways, plus more storage. In this case, a side-by-side of any width may be fine for you, and a tandem stroller would also be a good option.
- If you live in a rural area, you may not even have sidewalks, so a stroller that can handle rough terrain will be very helpful. You’ll want to invest in double strollers with real air tires and good shocks and suspension.

What Is the Best Side-By-Side Stroller for Kids?
Side-by-side double strollers are pretty self-explanatory – the two seats are next to one another. Our favorites were selected based on their fantastic features and categorized at various price points. Many of these strollers have awesome add-on accessories, such as bassinets and rain covers, so be sure to check with the manufacturer’s website to see everything they have to offer. Also, if you’re a runner, this category is for you. We have some side-by-side jogging strollers among our favorites.
- Bumbleride Indie Twin – $$$ (takes two infant car seats)
- Mountain Buggy Duet – $$$ (takes two infant car seats)

- Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 – $$$
- Britax B-Lively – $$

What Is the Best Tandem Stroller for Kids?
Tandem strollers remind us a bit of stadium seating – one seat is in front of the other, as opposed to beside it. These really come in handy for shopping and other public gatherings that might not have the room for a wider side-by-side stroller. We have listed several of our favorites at various price points, each with enticing features of their own!
- Contours Options Elite – $$ (takes two infant car seats)
- Contours Curve – $$$ (takes two infant car seats)
- Chicco Cortina – $$ (takes two infant car seats)
What Is the Best Inline Stroller for Kids?
Inline strollers might not be as well-known as their side-by-side or tandem stroller counterparts, but they are a great compact option. An inline stroller is a single stroller that can accommodate a second seat underneath, usually in the basket. It is a terrific choice for kids who live in big cities where space is very limited. You will be giving up basket space with an inline, but it will be worth it for making tight turns and keeping your twinnies close.
- Phil & Teds Sport Buggy – $$
- Britax B-Ready G3 – $$
What Is the Best Lightweight Tandem Stroller for Kids?
Not all tandem strollers are big and bulky. Some of them are practically light as a feather and are super easy to transport. Obviously, these lighter options won’t accommodate infant car seats, but they still work well for babies and toddlers alike.
What Is the Best Lightweight Side-By-Side Double Stroller for Kids?
We have found a few lightweight side-by-side options, too. We love these for older babies and toddlers who love to be able to see the world around them AND kick their legs without ticking off a sibling!
- UPPABaby G-Link 2 – $$
- Joovy Kooper X2 – $$
- Zoe Twin+ Luxe – $
What Is the Best Stroller for Twins Plus an Older Child?
How in the world do you get around with twin babies and a toddler who still needs a stroller? Believe it or not, there are some good options out there! Never fear, we’ve found the best strollers to accommodate three small kiddos.

- Bumbleride Indie Twin with Stroller Board Attachment
What Do I Need to Buy for Twin Babies?
This is a subject that this particular author feels VERY strongly about. I truly feel that my frame stroller was a product that completely saved my sanity during that first year with my twins. It was so simple to snap my daughters’ infant seats into the lightweight frame and wander aimlessly around Target, or bring them to my son’s hockey practice, or take a neighborhood stroll. These are pretty inexpensive as far as twin baby strollers go, and still – they’re worth EVERY penny.
What About Single Strollers That Can Become Double Strollers?
Recently, we’ve seen an influx of single strollers that can convert to double strollers (also known as modular strollers or single-to-double strollers) on the market. Many of these are marketed as being twin strollers, but buyer beware! It might be able to hold two children, but that doesn’t mean it works for twins.
Modular strollers were meant for an older child and a new baby to ride together. Often, the weight limits on the seats are different (one with a much higher limit), which won’t work for most twins. Also, the space between the front seat and the back seat is often cramped, so it probably won’t work for twins older than two.
If you’re going to spend good money on one big honkin’ stroller for kids, our advice is NOT to purchase a modular stroller. It will only last you for about two years or until your twins run out of room for their feet in the back seat.

Is UPPABaby Good for Twins?
We’ve already highlighted a UPPABaby stroller above in the “lightweight double stroller for kids” category. However, UPPABaby has another stroller that truly has all of the bells and whistles you could want. The Vista V2 Twin Stroller is as fancy as it gets, and it even comes with two bassinets for brand-new babies. You can also purchase the entire Vista V2 Twin Travel System, which includes the stroller, two bassinets, and two infant car seats. UPPABaby products are aesthetically pleasing, too – their designs and colors are very nice, simple, and clean.
UPPABaby is very highly regarded when it comes to stroller recommendations, and deservedly so! Just keep in mind that their contraptions come at a very high price. You’re looking at spending well over a grand if you buy new. If that’s in your budget, fantastic! If not, there are many other options that work, too. There’s no need to feel pressured to buy the most expensive products.

Do You Need a Double Stroller for Twins?
A double stroller is absolutely worth it for parents with multiple children. The freedom of being able to get out of the house with your kids while keeping them safe is priceless! Keep in mind that many twin parents try to keep their twins in a stroller until age 3 to 4 (sometimes even age 5 or 6, depending on their size and willingness to ride in it).
A twin stroller is especially helpful when visiting large parks, such as a zoo or a huge theme park like Disney World. It’s so much easier to have a fun time with your twins when you have the option to strap them in and keep them from running in two different directions! Plus, it will carry all your snacks, drinks, extra clothes, first aid kits, and anything else you may need at a moment’s notice.
If you’re concerned about your budget, please remember that you don’t have to buy a brand-new stroller. You can save a LOT of money by searching local buy/sell boards online to find a great stroller in used condition. (My frame stroller was purchased on Marketplace, and it was just like new!) Expensive double strollers usually last a very long time. On the other hand, if you have it in your budget to buy a pricier stroller, know that when you’re done with it, you can sell it and probably get some money out of it!
Happy shopping!
