URGENT RECALL: BUMBO SEATS

With over 84 accidents/reports on record (nineteen being skull fractures), the CPSC has finally stepped in and is warning consumers of the dangers of this item. With over 14 MILLION Bumbo seats in homes today, this major recall should be taken very seriously.

Most of the accidents have occurred when the Bumbo seat was placed on a raised surface and the infant has fallen from it. These seats should NEVER be used any place but on the floor.

The CPSC suggests that “Consumers should immediately stop using the product until they order and install a free repair kit, which includes: a restraint belt with a warning label, installation instructions, safe use instructions and a new warning sticker. The belt should always be used when a child is placed in the seat. Even with the belt, the seat should never be used on any raised surface. Consumers should also immediately stop using Bumbo seat covers that interfere with the installation and use of the belt. A video demonstrating proper installation of the restraint belt and proper use of the Bumbo seat are available at www.recall.BumboUSA.com” says the CPSC website.

Their website goes on to say, “Order the free repair kit by visiting https://www.bumbousa.com/safety-recall/ or calling (866) 898-4999 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Thursday and between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. CT on Friday. Do not return the Bumbo seat to retailers as they will not be able to provide the repair kit.”

Note From Nat

If you are saying to yourself “How mindless does a parent have to be, to think it’s safe for a child to be placed in one of these seats on a raised surface?”, well think about this: It’s not always the parents that are with the kids who make the mistakes. Sometimes grandparents come over, nanny’s, friends, etc and they might not have the same clear mind that a parent may.

I honestly believe that most parents know better, but apparently, some things have to be spelled out for everyone else.  Also, sometimes PPD or other types of depression gets in the way of your “clarity” allowing even the most mindful of parents to make the most harmful mistakes. I think the addition of the labels and warning stickers can only help, and not actually hurt. And hey, if it can prevent even ONE more injury, then cover that puppy with warning stickers!
