Why I’m Not Giving Social Media Access to My Kids
There is a lot of pressure in today’s world to introduce children to tablets, smartphones, and allow social media access before you may be ready for them to do so. Maybe it’s coming from grandma who wants to get them tablets to play with at her house. And then they start wanting them at YOUR house. And then they want to start playing multi-player games that aren’t exactly age-appropriate but they’re guilting you into it because “Johnny’s Mom lets him!” And then their friends in school start getting iPhones and getting social media access, and we’re off to the races!
There are so many decisions that you have to make as a parent about screentime and social media access and it starts a lot earlier than you think it will. But here’s my favorite tip: Make sure to visit Common Sense Media and take a look around their site. This is a fantastic resource that you’ll want to bookmark! The website rates movies, TV shows, games, apps, and books and explains why they may or may not be appropriate for your child, going into full detail on what you should know including recommended age restrictions. I love the section called “Parents Need to Know”; here you’ll find a breakdown by child age of what they recommend, plus a full breakdown of some of the more popular media such as Roblox, YouTube, SnapChat, Fortnite, and more, to help you understand what all of these things actually are.
If you’re looking for a system to help you block inappropriate content and social media access on your child’s device, check out Circle or Kidslox.
