Not everyone has the joy of having full time help from friends, family or nannies, sometimes you’re home alone and you realize…” I MUST take a shower before a letter arrives from the Board Of Health”. Here are the steps to fulfill one of your most basic needs…washing.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Clear Shower Curtain
- Some kind of clip (hair clip, binder clip, clothes pin)
- Two Bouncy Seats/Car Seats
- Robe/Towel
- Rug
Optional:
- Small speaker
- Luxurious Products
Step 1. Clip the shower curtain back and out of the way so that ONLY the clear shower curtain is showing. If you do not have a clear shower curtain, invest in a good one since the ones from the dollar store tend to tear too easily and often are not as “clear” as one would like.
Step 2. Bring their bouncy seats into the bathroom and activate any toys attached to check the batteries. If batteries need replacing, do so now. If you don’t have bouncy seats, bring their infant car seats into the bathroom but you might want to invest in some car seat toys that clamp onto the handle. Position the seats so that the babies will be facing into the shower. You should put the seats on a rug so if the seats start bouncing or vibrating, they won’t shimmy around. And make sure to harness them in snugly if they are in a car seat.
Step 3. Check your supplies! Make sure you have soap, washcloths, clean towels, etc. BEFORE you get in. While you’re at it, check the toilet paper supply too! If you would like some shower tunes, you may want to invest in a small waterproof speaker.
Step 4. Change, feed, and burp the babies so that they are relaxed.
Step 5. Get undressed and put on a robe or large bath towel before you go into the bathroom.
Step 6. Turn on the water so it can warm up and bring in the babies and secure them into their seats. If you are alone, consider leaving the bathroom door open so it doesn’t get too steamy for the little babes.
Step 7. Take your shower. Don’t rush! Since you can see your babies, you know they are ok and it will give you a few more minutes of downtime. Consider some aromatherapy. This will be great for you AND the kids. Lavender, chamomile, mandarin and rose are all great smells for babies.
Step 8. Think about the products you are using. Consider a shampoo/conditioner in one and in-shower body lotion (I swear by this stuff) so you have less time washing and more time just letting the water run over you.
Step 9. Sing, smile and enjoy this bit of downtime and reflect on what a great parent you are and what a clean parent you are!
Step 10. Come out, put your robe on, dry off and get the babies out of the room and move on to the next part of your day.
These great tips only work when the babies are old enough to be secured into a car seat or bouncy seat. As they get older, consider seats like the Contours Twist Grow-With-Me, or even excersaucers or high chairs if your bathroom is large enough.
Once they get too big, it’s harder to keep them contained safely in the bathroom while you are washing. MANY parents take showers the moment the babies go to bed for the night. All you need to do is bring your baby monitor into the bathroom but make sure it doesn’t fall in the tub or toilet.
While I’m sure I’ll get some grief for this, if you are not alone, and your spouse or partner is there with you, take a cup that can be covered (think travel mug!) into the shower with you containing your favorite beverage. It could be some chamomile tea or merlot. You may not be able to run to the spa, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring the spa to you. EVERY SINGLE DAY you should take a moment for yourself. It could be a shower, it could be a walk, it could be sitting in a room reading two pages of a book you started five years ago, but EVERY DAY you need to take a tiny bit of time for you. If you do, I promise you’ll be a better version of yourself. If you allow stress to accumulate, it will be hard to overcome. BUT, if you stay ahead of the game, we assure you, you’ll thank us.
