Baby Jogger Double Stroller
There are several models of Baby Jogger double strollers, including the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Double, Baby Jogger City Tour 2 Double, Baby Jogger Summit X3, and the Baby Jogger City Mini Select, which is a single to double stroller that requires a second seat for twins (sold separately).
There are so many double strollers out there on the market today, all competing for the twin market. But not all Baby Jogger double strollers are good for twins. We’ve broken down the best features that you should be looking for in a twin stroller to make sure you don’t have buyer’s remorse!
Is Baby Jogger owned by Graco?
No. Baby Jogger is owned by Newell Brands, which also owns Graco, Nuk, Contigo, Elmer’s, Papermate, Rubbermaid, Mr. Coffee, and many other popular name brands.
When can you use a baby jogger?
Most manufacturers advise waiting to use a jogging stroller or running stroller until your baby is at least 8 months old. Most don’t have the neck strength for jogging motion until 8 months. This will vary based on your child’s adjusted age and physical condition. You need to check with your pediatrician to determine the best age to start using a jogging stroller.
Please note that Baby Jogger is a stroller brand and they only sell one jogging stoller: The Baby Jogger Summit X3. All of the other strollers in the Baby Jogger line, such as the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Double, Baby Jogger City Tour 2 Double, and the Baby Jogger City Mini Select (all of which are VERY popular with twin families), are NOT jogging strollers. This can get really confusing when you’re trying to find the best stroller for your twins.
What is the difference between a stroller and a jogger?
A stroller is meant to be pushed only while walking. A jogger can be used for walking, jogging, or with other physical activity because it has better shocks and higher quality tires to conquer tougher terrain while keeping your babies safe. A good jogging stroller will have a front wheel that can be locked in position. This provides greater stability for your stroller and helps prevent the possibility of tipping over. Always look for a jogging stroller with a wrist strap. The strap provides added security by keeping the stroller near you during your routine.
What is the lightest baby jogger stroller?
The lightest stroller made by Baby Jogger is the City Tour 2. This one weighs only 14 pounds! The double option is the City Tour 2 Double and it is still incredibly lightweight at only 23 pounds.
Are jogger strollers good for everyday use?
As a general rule, yes. Jogging strollers have all the features required for everyday use. If anything, they have more features that you would need for a stroll to the park or a walk around the supermarket.
Many parents opt to only invest in a good jogging stroller and use it as their one and only stroller. Just be aware that if you aren’t using it for jogging, the extra features and the extra expense of having those features might be a bit unnecessary.
Are jogging strollers worth it?
If you are a runner, yes. If you will need a stroller to go from a sidewalk jaunt to a brisk jog then a jogging stroller is the way to go. The safety and comfort features cannot be matched. These strollers are known for handling uneven terrain and the bounce of a run with relative ease.
If you are not a runner, you might opt for another model and leave out the added running features of a jogging stroller.
Can you run with a baby jogger stroller?
Baby Jogger makes one jogging stroller. If you have the Summit X3 Jogging Stroller you can absolutely run with it. This jogging stroller handles terrain changes very well and has tons of safety features to protect your baby while you get your steps in.
Other Baby Jogger models are NOT jogging strollers and should not be used as such for the safety of your baby.
How do you jog with a stroller?
There are many tips and tricks out there to help you jog with a stroller safely.
- Make sure your baby is old enough and your pediatrician OK’s the activity. At least 6 to 8 months old AND a Dr’s approval is needed for optimal safety.
- Get the right stroller. Make sure your model is safe for running.
- Pack accordingly. Don’t be caught 3 miles from home with no water or diapers on hand. Nothing ruins a run faster than a cranky, wet baby or a dehydrated mama!
- Lock the wheel. The front wheel of your jogging stroller will lock, preventing a runaway stroller situation.
- Keep the weather in mind. If it’s cold out you might be fine to run in a tee and shorts. you’re moving. your baby is not. They need to be dressed accordingly.
- Know your path. Running with your baby is not the best time to learn a new trail. You do NOT want to be lost on a strange trail with a baby in a stroller.
- Practice safe running tips. Keep at least one earbud out, be aware of surroundings, don’t go at night. All of these things are even more important when running with your baby.
- Run one-handed. It’s harder on your legs, but run one-handed to keep control of your stroller at all times.
- Utilize ALL safety features. Follow all manufacturers’ instructions when using your stroller. No exceptions!
What to Look for in a Double Stroller for Twins
A large basket. Storage baskets! Your stroller that’s meant for two kids should have room to fit STUFF for two kids! That’s another problem with single strollers that convert to doubles — the basket is meant to hold stuff for just one child. You’ll also want to make sure there is easy access to the basket from different spots around the stroller so it’s easier to get items out. Cup holders are great too!
A solid frame. Look for a twin stroller that has a sturdy, solid frame that was meant to safely hold two children for the length of its use. Many single strollers can convert into a double stroller by adding a second seat, but these strollers were made for two children of different ages and are not ideal for two children of the same age, height, and weight. These strollers typically have a lower weight limit for one of the seats because it’s really been made for a baby + toddler. The stroller frame should be super sturdy!
5-point harnesses. Yes, some strollers only come with 3-point harnesses (only across the lap) but you absolutely need a 5-point harness (which also holds them back at the shoulders) to make sure your babies don’t fall forward out of the stroller when you have to make a sudden stop.
It’s easy to fold and lift up. If you’re having a hard time getting it to fold after a few tries, take it back. If it’s too heavy for you to lift into your car’s trunk, take it back. These things will only cause you more annoyance as time passes.
Independent reclining seats. You definitely need to be able to have each seat at a different recline. What if one baby is wide awake and wants to look around, but the other is sound asleep and could use a bit of recline? You’ll also want to find seats that recline as far back as possible to allow for good stroller naps!
Canopies that extend far down. When you’re walking towards the sun this is going to make a HUGE difference! The canopies should also work independently (not stuck in the same position together) such as the canopies on the Britax double stroller.
Peek-a-boo windows that are ventilated. These are on the back of each stroller seat so you can see what the kiddies are up to without having to peek into the front of the stroller. Ideally, these are mesh to allow for extra airflow, with a flap so you can keep it covered when it’s too cold or windy. This will ultimately allow for a smooth ride.
It fits in your trunk. You should not have to wrestle with your stroller to get it to fit in your trunk. Bonus points if you don’t have to take one of the seats off to fold it. Be aware that some strollers will fit better once you remove the tires, which typically can be popped back on in a snap. Always look for a good travel system.
A handlebar that reaches all the way across is key, and you can find that with the Britax double stroller. You’re going to need that full handlebar to maneuver your twin stroller with one hand at times. Strollers with two handles are typically more difficult to steer. An adjustable handlebar will make life so much easier.
It fits in your house. Measure all of your doorways and hallways to make sure that the stroller will fit inside your home, ideally without having to fold it up first. Side-by-side strollers are often less convenient for this reason. When you’re coming home from a long walk with your infant twins and it suddenly starts to rain, you’ll thank me!
Tips for Air Travel with Double Strollers
Strollers and all baby carriers will need to be screened by X-ray and or manually. If you have a stroller and car seat, only one can be checked at the gate. If you are not planning to use the car seat on the plane, you will want to check it at the ticket counter. On some airlines, strollers over 20 lbs must be checked at the ticket counter and strollers under 20 lbs can be used in the airport and then checked at the gate. Check ahead with your carrier to find out their rules for stroller weight. If you must check your double stroller at the ticket counter, plan to use baby carriers throughout the airport.
Be aware that some airlines have a weight limit to gate-check a stroller. According to the American Airlines website (as of April 2017), their policy states, “Each ticketed customer is allowed 1 stroller. Only small, collapsible, and light strollers (up to 20 lbs/9kgs) can be checked at the gate. Any stroller that weighs over 20 lbs/9 kgs, is too large, or is non-collapsible must be checked at the ticket counter.”
This policy does not take into account that the average double stroller weighs between 26 and 37 pounds. As any parent of twins knows, our double stroller is one of the most important pieces of equipment we have.
When you are traveling with multiple small children — especially if you are traveling alone — it is extremely difficult to manage an airport without a stroller that can be gate-checked. And the fact of the matter is that there are very few double strollers on the market that meet the 20 lb. weight limit.
