Should You and the Kids See MALEFICENT?

Should You and the Kids See MALEFICENT?

Last updated on August 3rd, 2023 at 10:19 pm

The hype surrounding Maleficent, this long awaited feature Disney film, has gotten me and my twins all giddy. Recently after returning from a trip to Disneyland I had the opportunity to be the fly on the wall during an interview with Elle Fanning, Aurora herself which got me even more excited about this film. My expectations were high and I started counting the days till the preview.

So was all the hype worth it? Should you and your family see Maleficent this weekend?

What is the story all about

Maleficent explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant, Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

Will your kids want to see it?

Yes! Both boys and girls, will find something charming and relatable in this amazing film. With some graphic scenes, it may be scary for the littler ones. Our recommended age to see this film would be 7+. The running time is about 1.5 hours so it may be a little long for the tiny tots anyway.

Harsh themes

This movie touches on the topics of war, good versus evil (of course), and vengeance. Some of the scenes in which the two kingdoms are at war can be a little intimidating. With trees that come to life and knights on horses battling them, it might overwhelm and scare the kids.

Why you’ll love it

I have to be honest, the plot line was a bit predictable. I saw where the story was going before it was spelled itself out for the audience. That usually doesn’t happen to me with movies. I purposely try to avoid making any predictions during a film, but this one I couldn’t help. Perhaps it was because I was hoping that Disney filmmakers and I were making the same sound decision. You’ll see what I mean. One of the aspects that I appreciated most about the movie was the music. The score is remarkable and I look forward to finding the iTunes radio channel dedicated to this movie – LOL!

I also love that this was one of the first movies I ever recall seeing that had me cheering for who I thought was the villain. A good life lesson in this movie would be don’t judge a book by its cover and that people are often misunderstood.

I am happy to say that this film led to a wonderful discussion with my children about people in our own life who are misunderstood. I love how Disney movies always provoke a conversation with my children.

This isn’t just the film for the moms alone. Dads will get a kick out of sexy Angelina Jolie, the mother of all eye-candy. Leave it to Angelina to make a Disney villain sexy. Oh, and don’t forget she is a twin mom after all! In fact, one of her twins is featured in the film! Be on the lookout for the scene when the toddler approaches Maleficent in the forest, that’s one of Brad and Angelina’s twins!

So don’t wait any longer, grab your tickets now before you leave for the theater – I’m sure it will be a sold-out weekend. Still not sure if you want to see it? Take a look at the preview below. Warning: you might be singing the song for the rest of the day! Hey, I warned ya.

Interview of Elle Fanning. Who is her favorite Disney Princess?
