Of course, I don’t know anyone else’s story.  But I remember rather clearly the day I found out that I would be having not one baby, but two.

We had our first ultrasound and there was only one little blob on the screen.  We were secure and happy when we returned for our second one to check up on the status of our bouncing baby blob. DON’T Need When You’re Having Twins

The husband was with me this time and he was excited too.  I looked at the screen with anticipation to see my soon-to-be human.  The ultrasound tech was silent.  There were two blobs now.  I could see the heartbeat in the one I knew about. I thought the other one was just part of the clot I had from early in my pregnancy.

To be honest I didn’t really pay attention. However, when she got up and left the room I started to panic. Something was wrong of course. My doctor came in and took over control of the probe and smiled.

“Everything looks good.”

Whew.

I relaxed.  It had been a long hard road to get here I wasn’t looking for more bad news.  I smiled at my husband and asked if he could see the flutter of the tissues that was the heartbeat and he said yes.

Then I innocently asked, “What is the other blob?”

Without missing a beat she said, “That is your other baby.”

Um.  What?

And we were off to the races. DON’T Need When You’re Having Twins

Though my husband looked calm and stoic and happy at the time he now tells me he was freaking out as much on the inside as I was on the outside.  As we left the doctor’s office I came unglued down on the street.

“How are we going to do it?  The cost?  The stuff?  Everything?”

Tears streamed down my face, but he placidly looked at me and said,

“What is the big deal?  We just do everything twice.”

He was, of course, right.  One baby is just like two — you just do everything twice.  In theory, it sounds simple, but in practice, it is a whole different ball game.  Now, my twins were my first kids so I suppose my view is skewed.

Babies need supplies — quite a lot of supplies.  You think that they only eat, sleep, and poop but there is so much “stuff” that goes along with that.

I think most of us find a Buy Buy Baby in our local town and start to plan what we need and what we don’t for our little bundles of joy.  If there is no Buy Buy Baby I am sure there are other options. But any large retailer can be a gargantuan nightmare that is overwhelming for a newly pregnant mom.

But keep in mind — you do not need it ALL.  Your babies will survive.  I could give you a list of what you don’t need when you’re having twins, but that is not the point of this article. DON’T Need When You’re Having Twins

The moment you get pregnant everyone will have advice for you.  They will tell you how they did things a million times over and tell you that you should do it that way too.

The funny thing is, you don’t have to.

You can listen politely, take their advice, or toss it out the window.  I don’t know how many times I was told that wipe warmers are stupid and a waste of money.  Yet having a newborn squall in the middle of February because the wipe you touched his bare butt with is cold was enough to do me in emotionally.  I went out that next day and got one for each baby.  They were cheap, they were easy, and they solved a problem — and most importantly they made my job easier and made me calmer.

That may not be the case for you. And that is OK.

Your children, your wonderful babies, will still love you.  They will still eat, sleep, and poop.  They will still cry and you will still have to bathe them.

  • You don’t need to be afraid to try something that another mom tells you is a waste of time and money.  If you think it will help your family then do it.
  • You don’t need to worry if Sally down the street thinks it is stupid to pay for a bathtub for the babies.  If you want one, and it helps you, then get it.
  • You don’t need to feel guilty if you don’t like the store brand of diapers. You are going to be changing a lot of them. Get what works.
  • You don’t need to think you have no clue.  You do have a clue.  Those babies have spent the better part of a year growing and changing inside you.  No one knows them like you do.

Have faith in your abilities.  Having twins is all about planning and schedules.  Keeping those babies on track so you can live a happy life together is of the utmost importance.  Trust yourself and your burgeoning mommy instincts.  You can do this.
